margaret lampert's window series

Portraits in doorways and through window frames have become a necessary alternative to the traditional face-to-face methods. However, for Margaret Lampert, shooting through glass and screens has been a longtime love. "I got really excited about them this past Fall. The reflections give an added depth to the images and allow me to tell a richer and more layered story"

There are many photographers who thrive in creating atmosphere and many who thrive in finding where it already exists. Margaret lives and works within the latter. Upon arriving to her subject's home, often for the first time, she begins taking in the various atmospheric elements-- shadows on a wall, a forest reflecting, gold light against a screen door-- and pressing into each one. "It's an oasis of creativity; Every time I go out to shoot, it's a discovery."

The soft tones and pastoral light of her images creates a quiet space for reflection-- both inward and outward. Branches from behind her lens, mirror themselves against windows and create interesting folds for the subject to emerge from. Margaret not only captures the painterly quality of shooting through glass, but also elicits an authentic calm from her subjects. "I talk to them over the phone while I shoot outside and make sure to remind them to keep breathing.

A good reminder for us all.

In a time when life is primarily lived behind closed doors, we are honored to have Margaret's beautifully relatable and resonant work featured in APA's recent artist highlight.
