1, 2, 3: one image, two billionaires, 333,333 dollars
Photographer Michael Prince’s Forbes cover shot of Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss was sold as an NFT (non-fungible token) at auction for $333,333.00 on April 8, 2021. Prince’s portrait of the billionaire tech twins was made into the one-of-a-kind digital artwork titled “Merchants of the Metaverse” by contemporary artist Yoshi Sodeoka.
The auction was held through the NFT marketplace Nifty Gateway (owned by the Winklevoss brothers) and Forbes has indicated that all proceeds will be donated to the Committee to Protect Journalists and the International Women’s Media Foundation.
“I knew ahead of time that the photo would be made into an NFT. I think we all would’ve been pleased to see it sell for any amount of money—no one was expecting it to go for this much,” says Prince. “I’m really happy to see the funds are going to support journalists.”
